So Now It’s Official (senryu)

“Male, female, other?”
HR asked me. “Idiot!”
I answered; she typed.

If she is HR asking for their job, and the response is neither one of the options or respectful towards the person asking, really says a lot about the 'me' character. HR is generally the worst though, glad you're having fun!

ha, well done.

I still get caught sometimes reading they/them. Is this a duo, I thought it was a solo artist, sometimes takes me a bit.

It’s just people being themselves after thousands of years of being stifled by other people’s rules via religion. More power to ‘em. Just answer the question and move on. Big Grin

They/them works well for this forum where we really have no idea who we’re talking about. Smile

Damn these little poems draw me in.

Technically it is a senryu as it examines human nature. I'll treat the title as a footnote or an aside so I don't have to mention that senryu shouldn't have titles, but it's fine as the ku still works without it.

There is a possible ambiguity in this, in the sense of , is the narrator calling themselves an "idiot" or HR. I presume that because of "I answered" that the narrator is calling themselves or else you would have said "I replied".

This said... I see 'she typed' as unnecessary perhaps. I doesn't seem to add anything

could it be something like --

“Male, female, other?”
HR asked me. I sighed back,
"I'm an idiot!"

Cheers for the read.

Glad the ambiguity is working ambiguously.

The problem is, now I'm officially an Idiot, which restroom do I use? Am I just supposed to hold it all day? That would be properly Idiotic.

I think the poem's intention is for "she typed" to be an essential part of the payoff. The ambiguity in the preceding lines is setup for this punchline.

Right, is the speaker calling themselves or HR "idiot"? Presumably this also isn't clear to HR. Perhaps "she typed" thus suggests that the speaker is being written up.

At the same time, to "type" someone is to put them in a category-box, which could be what HR is now doing, since the speaker has made clear that they are not male, female, or even other, but simply: "Idiot!"

For me it was clear that in answer to the question What are you? HR typed in Idiot. making it official.
Fun poem, fun to hear how people read it.
