Orthodox theology
is built off what believers
witness and experience
while the Reformers' work,
based as it is on reason,
aims at first to sway
but in the end boils down
to playing for control,
Calvin---through his concept
of Divine Election---
robbing both the sinner
and the saved of freedom.

All the answers raise more questions instead,
dropping folders in his passenger seat,
the endless night ahead fills him with dread,
organizing reports into spread sheets.
A job's a job, and this one's essential,
especially if one believes in just-
ice. He slams his fist, feeling resentful
they voted out Ed McLellan, why must
they defund the police?? Theyre over-worked
as is and thieves and killers never stop.
His desk is cluttered with old paperwork,
can't solve a case before a new one drops.
Home, brewing coffee, turning on a fan,
calm and careful, he takes a closer scan.

Overcooked
I think this time
they may have burned
the broth by urging
all the kinds
of people whose votes
they received
last time to come
again. I got
a dozen calls a day
and texts
besides– how many ballots
do I have, not
bushels, just the one.
Maybe some got so mad
about the spam
they voted for
the other guys.
