ANOTHER NIGHT UPON US
She sits in the front seat
Fumbling and fiddling
Trying to find the track
To tell me what’s behind
Her recent reticence
In less than a month
We’ve lived a lifetime
She senses
It’s soon over
And so do I
We’ve had our honeymoon
I’ve had my child’s chase
But we barely settled in
Before the fade
And falling out
Our brightness burned
Briefly and better
Than the masses
That milled around us
And droned like dead men
She pushes play
Sings along
Against the sun
Wishing it would shield
The descending darkness
While we look away
And listen
Like it’s the last time
