might conspire or collude -- for me, the meaning of conspire and collude are a little too close to justify having them both, especially since you already have conspiracy in the title. Maybe another word choice?
to make themselves better off. -- this is wordy, and I don't like the sentence ending on 'off.' I'd rephrase.

The question of it is worth thinking about as well as the Machiavellian view of human nature it provides. 

I think you have a good piece here, it just needs a little work.
