When you are on a coastal stream (i.e. Gulf Stream) the tides are always on your side.

In addition a barrier/obstacle may be at a fixed point, but that does not mean that you know exactly what point you are at in relation to that obstacle. If you are going down the Mississippi River then the tide is at a fixed point.  But how long will it take you to get there?  Now we as humans have charted that path so if we are able to determine where we are on that path we can determine how far away we are from the end point.  But we do not have a complete and comprehensive map of our lives.  So death may be at a fixed point in our lives, but how long will it take to get there?
