The Spoils
As if lions wouldn't build
abattoirs and gas chambers
if they were truly King
of the jungle.
As if Hyenas wouldn't laugh
their way to the White House
once they'd cancelled the lion
out of sheer annoyance.
As if Crocs wouldn't corner
the market on fresh water
and charge the thirsty
who'd come to drink.
As if another great ape wouldn't
have made the same mess
of the world as we,
had they beat us to the spoils.
