Asking a girl for a date
Is something that most men hate
You don’t know what she’s going to say
You think the answer may be nay
She could give you the run around
Or just flatly turn you down
But if she happens to say yes
You’re really in a worse mess
But sometimes it is necessary
To have a date to be merry
Deciding which girl you’re going to ask
Is at the least a very big task
She must have a fantastic face
And curves in just the right place
She must have a marvelous mind
And also be extremely kind
If you find a girl like this
It seems that you can hardly miss
After you have picked the one
The hardest part is yet to come
You have to ask her if she’ll go
You’re wondering if she’ll say no
But if she says, “that will be great”
You say, “I’ll pick you up at eight”
When you go to get that girl
Your head is in a big whirl
By the time she gets into the car
You need a drink at a bar
Now you take her out to eat
And help her into her seat
The prices here are extremely big
But still she eats like a pig
Then you take her to a show
And you sit on the last row
Now it is time to take her in
You wonder if she’ll go again
You get some loving at the door
But you still want some more
When you get home you soon find
That girls are no good for mankind
You have found that you are broke
Going out is just a joke

While going through boxes of my mother's things, I found a very old edition of my high school newspaper ... the annual literary edition ... published in 1975 (my senior year). On page 5, I found this poem, written when I was 17 years old. It was a required assignment for senior English. I did not write another poem for over 40 years, when one burst forth from my unconscious (9 more have emerged so far). I thought I would share it here, and this seemed the best forum. If only I had known then what I know now.
