Last Summer Morning- 9/22/24

I set an alarm for 8:43am
to make sure I knew
when the change came.

I’ll blow out my candles
tomorrow, and wish
things were different.

I imagine falling
leaves as days
we spent together,

some so colorful
yet all so fragile.
I pick up one fallen

red maple leaf,
watch sunlight blazing
through its veins-

I say your name; realize
leaves are falling for you
for the last time.
