Another lowly poet looking for continued critique. I hail from Central New York, and I've been active recently as a poet and writing teacher for students at my local community center. I'm also in a local writing society that is publishing our first zine on my birthday, 6/21; so close I can taste it.
I first became active as an artist in Rochester, which is about an hour from where I am now. I write performance poetry as well as work only for the page, and I'm hitting a wall with submissions, so I'm turning my work out for review. I see here there's rules about critique before posting work, so I'll get on that now. I have a huge backlog of high ticket work I would like some intense review of, but I know I have to give some to get it back.
I do have a question about how submitting to lit magazines will work after I post my work here; can I do that without getting in trouble? How has that experience been for others?
Anyhow, thanks for taking a sec to read this, and my warmest hello to you!
Cheers,
Olivia
Note that the level and forthrightness of Crit goes up from Basic through to Intensive, so you might need the thick skin for the latter. In the end, changing or staying with a piece is up to you, so take crit in that spirit.
I don't know how well you'll be able to work through a 'huge backlog' of work as the site isn't as active as it used to be some years ago, but a reasonable volume should be okay.
About submitting to lit magazines - there are some members who've done that for poems that they've workshopped. The rules vary from magazine to magazine. This site considers your poem to be your property and you can do with it what you like, but other magazines may or may not accept poems that have been published in any forum. You can browse through some older posts here on that topic. To be on the safer side, maybe don't post the poems you intend to publish, but do post others like them, and apply the same principles to edit.
