Great and Terrible things
#12
Hi! I'm old and slow, but I'm endeavoring to persevere.
Here's my attempt to answer your past comments to my post:

AI is just like the internet. One day it’s a curiosity, and the next it’s making
you wonder how you ever managed without it. That's definitely been my
experience. It’s messy, ridiculous, and definitely not magic; but that's part
of the fun since I'm a technology freak at heart. (Well, fun for me; obviously
not that much fun for some other people.)

On the resource‑use worries, sure, data centers are big, loud, and thirsty for
our lifeblood. But every major technology starts out clumsy. All those
megastructures busy draining our infrastructure of electricity and water...
But the funny thing is, that phase is already starting to end.
(See my other post: "Bye-bye massive datacenters")

And oh boy, the stuff that will happen: Political intrigue, military death machines,
deep‑fake chaos, and the AI's busy inventing policies that they ascribe to humans
and convincing us to believe them. It sounds like dystopian science fiction but half
of it is probably already happening. The problem is that the potential profit is
believed to be so great that the big corporations are willing to risk any danger,
even the collapse of civilization, to win immense short-term profit... good old capitalism.

Economic doom, America vs. Europe vs. China... Paranoids, who might actually be
right, are convinced that other dark parties are secretly in control and make so
much noise about it that it actually does disguise what's really happening (my own
paranoid conspiracy theory). But I humbly think that the real problem, as usual,
is our pathetic human society that's barely being held together with duct tape.

And yes, if humans are involved, bunches of organizations are already using
data centers for surveillance porn.

AI is good, evil, and destined to eventually be ignored like fish ignore water.
It’s going to change things in ways we can't begin to comprehend (along
with the usual cultural nonsense).
I guess I've become a pathetic fanboy of the apocalypse. Smile

P.S. But as far as social disruption goes, AI is insignificant compared to the
social, economic, and environmental destruction global warming is causing.
That's the bona fide REAL apocalypse.
all this useless beauty... but what the hell, why not?
