You can’t write an epic anymore
The illiad is shite the odyssey is shite objectively speaking
But if they are not shite it’s only because of the culture and memory invested in them
Logically, they are infuriating.
Athena pops up and speaks to Telemachus? So the gods exist? And after you die you’re a mere shade? People know this - not just assume, but live it in the day to day? And it doesn’t screw them up psychologically? Where’s the philosophical framework around this nonsense?
Then there’s Achilles, whose glorification is the glorification of an ancient Reinhard Heydrich.
The fucker had the choice of a long life and could have invented space travel but chose instead to die in an unnecessary and illogically long battle
Why do we not just destroy every copy of this garbage? Eurocentrism. Because the English had no poetry worth the name before Wyatt and Sydney, and need to have this usurped tradition for cultural legitimacy.
It baffles me that this rubbish is placed on a pedestal. Give me the tribal folklore of Swaziland any day.
To any Greeks reading this: you chose to replace the oracle of Delphi with a hundred million churches, you don’t count

Not so with the Bible and its stories (in the western tradition), which are morally varied but complex and enduring. And much better poetry.

Or maybe you can, but it has to be complex. And not a whinge. Not more existentialist waffle.
Maybe it has to be modelled on the odyssey, because art can only survive through allusions now, by appealing to the subconscious memory

I mean you absolutely can write whatever you want - especially an epic.  Will anyone ever read it?  Probably not but I don't think that was an issue either way.  Will it be any good?  Probably not
.  But who really cares?
