I like the thumbs gesture, but I think "hidden" introduces another layer of "puzzle" for the reader that makes the omage a bit too obscure perhaps (why is the speaker hiding their thumbs, one wonders)

Maybe instead just a hint of editorial, something like

your eyes dart back to your thumbs 
clenched in pockets against the world 

or whatever
