on re-thinking it, it should be one of these:
ancient ipod
broken earbuds
sound of ocean
(sound of sea when putting a conch shell up to your ear)
ancient ipod
broken earbuds
no sound of water
(i.e. the damn thing's broken and all the sound in your world emanates from an ipod)

might work.

I like the last line a lot, it throws up a few connotations, Are you walking next to a river?.
Are the earbuds only broken in the physical sense and still emitting music, and the water is mixed in to the music like frogs or sheep can be for instance?. Even if you used "ocean" the connotations would be the same for me exept it would also throw up the image. The questions were to myself, just thinking outloud ya know....JG
PS, I like your parody of Basho's famous haiku.

I'm intrigued by the notion of mixing frogs and sheep into music.
Maybe the earbuds are a metaphysically mixed metaphor that was broken
by the last straw as it slurped watery frogs playing musical sheep.

Nice one...
