Howls near the Edge of Darkness
#1
The blazing fire warmed my imagination
and kept the wilds at bay
at first darkness, my scream sent my
husband laughing - but not the bat away.
I saw him at the tip of the tree
as the moon rose above the forest
he flew straight then crooked at me.
I was ever glad for the fire.

I heard dogs barking near
in the woods, or so I thought…
and being the friend of nature
that I am; I was concerned for
the hungry beasts and that they
only had one little graham cracker
that had fallen from my picnic table.

Into the Yurt I wondered and came
out with two pieces of bread
for the sharing and went beyond
the rim of light and the border
of my campsite into the area
nearby that was at the edge
of the woods and total darkness.

As I threw the last chunks of bread
I heard the most maniacal cackle
just two feet away, sounding up
in a tree – a whooping, barking
something - menacing at me!

My eyes bugged out, and I
made haste to flee back
to my warm fire’s protection
and my campsite boundary.
The darkness was deep.

Later within the safety
of my cozy yurt, I
ventured to look out my
window to find the beast
and there were two!
Looking like alien cat things,
fat as could be, jet black
as black as the night
and beastlike with
long claws and walking
on two feet!

Then suddenly it dawned
upon me, nearby movement
and just under my window
staring up at me… was
the fat, fuzzy round eyes
with gray circles and
twitching nuzzle, and
huge tail – a raccoon.

I never knew that they
howled and barked
and now I do.
It seems to me they
are a cat and dog thing…
Nature’s left me
without a clue
and a little more
than afraid.
