Hello everyone. I'm from New Zealand. This looks like a great group of serious-minded poets and I can see there are great workshops and guides that I'll certainly benefit from. I write Flash Fiction and short stories, as well as poetry - with poetry being my passion!

Hi, I'm a 21 year old from Canada.
I like to do fun things like write poetry whilst drunk, as I reckon a drunk mind reveals a sober heart.

I never liked poetry from a young age, but things have changed. I've been through existential periods in my life in which my only form of release was to write down how I felt at the moment. That's really all I had, as I wouldn't reach out to anyone for help. Writing became a form of catharsis for me, otherwise I'd go insane from all the racing thoughts in my head.

I love melancholic writing, and everything dark. Never trust a happy song  Tongue

Hmm... here's one to monitor closely. If we don't, next thing we know there'll be snakes under our cabooses.
Canada... they seem nice on the outside, but the isolation people are subjected to in the great-white-north is ideal
for producing antisocial personality disorders (psychopaths and sociopaths for us non-professionals).

@ cloud: Hating poetry is a good sign; everyone who starts life liking poetry always ends up writing shitty poems.
And speaking of delusion and self-loathing: You just gotta come over and add some of your dystopic words to the
witch's brew of PWoF  (the final thing ends up sitting on Halloween).

We're not all serious-minded. Seriousity kills creativity (and vice versa); poets from New Zealand, being so far under,
need especially to watch out for this. I'd recommend participating in the upcoming PWoF before it's too late for you.
And welcome!

Thank the gods! Someone who isn't from Canada or New Zealand.
Welcome to this crucible of crazy wordage and you'd better participate in PWoF.
If you don't, I'll start spreading the rumor that you're actually from both Canada and New Zealand.
But really.. Welcome!

Hi pigpen. New here! I've been writing all my life. Lately, I have just been writing short phrases now and again, as well as lyrics. I thought it'd be fun to put them up for critiques!

Not another Kiwean! Talk about alien hordes... (though maybe I'm just scared of competition).
Well, ok, I can't stop you (not without getting mercedes on my case).
Welcome!
Ray

P.S. And if you're going to be here, you might as well join in with us on PWoF. It's going to be fun (and it being
non-competitive and all, I think I'm safe from you there).

P.P.S. You said: "I have just been writing short phrases now and again".
That reminds me of a quote from Jorie Graham:
"Writing poetry is learning to express yourself in incomplete sentences." Smile

Thanks! So I posted a critique, and maybe I'm stupid, but I can't find the option to post a new thread. (Moderate critique forum).

Hi Youi

Welcome Smile I think you can't post a new thread until your account has been verified or something like that, I found I was ok the day after I joined to inflict my words on the Poetry Nation. Looking forward to reading your contributions

Is the welcome letter not going out? I believe it should go to your email and your PM box here. It explained that you don't become a full member with unlimited posting privileges until 3 critiques in the workshops are mod approved. Did you not get that?

It's also on the Rules Page, link in the banner:

Quote:6. For newly registered members; you must first leave acceptable feedback on other people's poems before you will be allowed to post your own poetry. All your posts will be moderated during this probation period. Once you are able to leave 3 pieces of acceptable feedback, in any of the following forums.

Basic Critique
Mild to Moderate Critique
Intensive Critique and Workshopping

you will be granted wider access to start your own threads and present your work in the the poetry forums for critique. After that, all members are expected to leave at least one new critique for someone else before starting a new workshop thread.

If possible, leave feedback in the forum you wish to get feedback from for your own poetry. though ideally, you could leave feedback everywhere.

Hi everyone,

I suddenly started writing poetry again, after years of not being interested in it. And I'm curious to see if they're intelligible.
Also curious to read other's works again.

Hi, Rena, been there, done that. Big Grin I hope you find this site as useful and fun to work/play at as I did when that happened to me. Welcome to the Pen.

    Hi!
I suddenly start writing poetry again every week or so. I used to call it "writer's block", now I call it "natural".

Welcome!
Ray

P.S. I'd watch trying to be "intelligible"; if it's not unintelligible, people might not recognize it as being poetry.

While I agree that bullshit is an important ingredient of poetry as well, I'm think I can make
a compelling argument for why unintelligibility surpasses it.

Since this is more the subject for a discussion thread, I won't go on; just add one thing: Metaphor!
Metaphor is poetry's (as well as language's) heart and soul and unintelligibility is the essence of metaphor --
it provides the cognitive dissonance necessary for creativity, for new understanding.
