Sadly, I worry more about the school volunteers than anyone else. I think sports coaches have a reputation for being the worst offenders (the guy coaching your daughter's traveling volleyball team). Then again, the bus driver knows where you live.....

I think that people are more willing to make a public spectacle out of someone caught doing bad things because there's no personal connection to someone halfway across the country, whereas before it meant turning on a member of your community. That's my take on it, anyway.

I think people are just more protective of their kids these days. When I was in highschool my creative writing teacher married a girl as soon as she graduated, someone I knew had a long term relationship with the film teacher, haven't thought of them in years. I dated a teacher for a while, I remember seeing a great Van Gogh exhibit with him, then I fell in love with a guy my age.

My guy actually had a sexual relationship with a teacher when he was 12 or 13, his brothers still laugh and roll their eyes over that one.

So yeah, I think it's always gone on, maybe more so, but now everything's splashed out in the open.

Anyone in a position of authority has no business in a relationship with someone they have that control over. Even starting up a relationship after a student has left school, if that student was in the teacher's class or in some position whereby he/she exercised power over the student, then it's grooming and it's just fucking wrong.

Ideally, I'd say that there should be no real power imbalance in a healthy relationship, but that's going to fuck with all the dopey saps who think that 50 Shades of Grey is romantic and not just stalky/creepy/rapey.

These things have always happened, right? Media definitely brings so much to light now.
I think that song had an affect on everyone: "Age aint nothin but a number."
