Frida reads the headlines


‘Trotsky attacked in Fortress Home’.
He died this morning. If you hadn’t found
sanctuary for him with us in Mexico
maybe Piochitas would still be alive.
Estupido, Diego. He was betrayed.

Your affair with my sister Cristina
almost killed me. I left, cut my hair,
made a new life, yet I came back.Still
you catted around, so I did too. Leon
was one of my lovers. I think you knew.

We’d leave the Blue House separately,
meet in secret at the house you gave Cristina.
We loved, excited, like naughty children
hiding from the world. I even hoped
you’d seduce Natalie.

Politically you moved away from them;
two years since they left the Blue House.
Now he’s dead. Of all the weapons available
to this assassin, he used the pick of an ice axe
through Trotsky’s head. Just one small nip.

 Chickens and a Rock

Gray and brown feathered chickens
grub for worms on the near slope.

On the side of the far hill
a flat rock situates eighteen inches
into clay and loam.

Wavy lines on the stone’s surface
conform to the contours
the banks of this valley have held
for twelve thousand years.

A deep cross on the side of the rock
precisely conforms to the orientation
of north, south, east and west as
demonstrated by each day’s rotation.

Someday the rock will have a name,
have its picture on the cover and
headlines enough to make granite blush.

But for now, the chickens
pecking will have to do.

by happenstance of birth while overseas
this power, issued a new
counterfeit’s certificate
denying truth and history as surely

all to confirm
this poor girl’s madness

and State’s status as an ass.

not actually involved
in this transaction.

...The shipping company insists that their driver left the missile in the country's designated safe space, however the receiving country insists that it was delivered inappropriately. The company states that as the item was a gift, not paid for by the receiving country, it can do little to offer compensation, which must be sought by the sender. The sending country declined to comment at length, stating only that "We send a lot of items. Once dispatched we can do little to influence the intentions attached to them. Any responsibility in this case lies with the shipping company and we will not be involved further with this particular consignment." A neighbor of the receiving company comments "We've had many problems with deliveries in this area. They just toss them where they please, even when the items are very important. It often feels like they just don't care." Other concerns include increased automation, which many worry may take the personal touch out of the art of international postage...

I can't remember the last time I watched the news.
Did they ever do a story about Tom and Lily's
welcome home party? Or about the cup
of sugar Nina lent me the other day? She's so sweet.
I'd like to see a segment about the missing
gloves we found on the playground last week.

I stopped watching because no one could tell me
where to plant my carrots, or how much sun
tomatoes need. Nobody had a decent recipe
for cherry pie. I never lent a cup
of anything to anyone –
they said to stay inside.

It came out of the fields
without a cry,
found its way into teenage hands.
Six million hits in the first week.

She left school
with labour pains,
six hours and forceps later

the midwife asked a young staff nurse
