This is another one that could go so many directions!

My personal second guess is that the smell of ozone is taken to characterize "one(s)" whose being is electrical in nature - robots. that is, thinking machines - who are persons otherwise indistinguishable... hence ordered to separate themselves from the rest.  The rest of us, that is, who stink of complex halitosis and wet goat.

Having, no doubt, missed the point, I like it.  Although the smell of ozone makes me nervous.
