A Dime, A Doesn’t, A Cousin

If
you swallow your pills right, then
Victory is a special type of medicine
One not born with sisters, brothers, and cousins
The kind that works like common cents,
Copper on the sidewalk
Like rainbows, when rain was a remedy
To drought, oh the bitter thing
“Just eat your medicine, please
Eat your medicine”
Mama says to you
- Her ten year old -
Your home two bedrooms, too small to stand in
And don’t you dare forget
Winning is your name
In ink says, “my road ends here”
Was it really Mama, or was that god
Whispering in your ear :
“there is no sidewalk
For you this time
Rub the change together
Why, that's a million dollars
In papa’s eyes it was
Three dimes
One dime for each cousin
A dime a dozen
