Hang on a minute - the ONLY thing I know about Haiku is the syllables go like this

5, 7, 5

this one is 4, 6, 6

I've been short changed and the gain of a syllable on the last line won't compensate me for that!

yes you have. it's scandalous.
575 should be used as a guide. the season and cut and lack of poetic device are the most important parts.
i put a link to basho up in another haiku. he's in the text poetry forums at the bottom of the home page, he's written some fantastic haiku
with 2,4,5 syls

I thought basho was the ring in which they did the Sumo wrestling - it shows how little I know about anything Japanese.Smile

But, the problem is, you see...I need rules, I like to think that I've managed to do something right. So, if the rules are being broken all over the place, (even if not by me)- it's like some-one stealing my blue-blanket.Beg (Any way just 'cos Basho breaks the rules doesn't mean us English speakers can do so, too)

And before you say it - I do not have OCD or whatever they call it.

(I don't know what this means...text forum at the bottom of the home page)

actually we created a set of rules to help us cope with not being able to properly translate Japanese poetry.
in japanese the 575 rule doesn't exist. and the basho is a is also something to do with sumo, i think it's what the schools are called
writing the 575 rule down was the worst thing they did because now many people don't know whether to hop skip or jump Smile
