Benjamin Franklin controlled much of the written word that got out in early America and sure enough they still teach him in contemporary classes. Then of course you have the ascribed meanings to texts that you would see in academic journals and these documents are to be respected. One's own interpretation is inevitably influenced by how the material is presented and what accompanying literature is used as a basis for examination on the text. Many writers of American literature wanted to start up art without being influenced by Europe, but now we are still influenced by work from Europe and America itself has a unique history in literature as well. This was all somewhat of a digression...
Who's in charge of what gets published and who's professional: I don't know, and I don't care. I've had a few books published, and wherever I happen to be, I take however many printed copies I can get and donate them to the used bookstores throughout the surrounding areas. I knew a girl that worked at a B.Dalton, and she sold seven copies there. But she was hot enough to sell anything; most especially herself.
It's always a relief for me when these books officially go out of print. They're grown ups then, and have been around long enough that I'm no longer help accountable for what they say and do.
