Thanks for the welcomes. I'm new to critiquing, never done so before. I was a member on a few dying poetry forums, where every one just fluffed you up and patted your back. I decided I wanted to improve my writing, push myself to develop my artistic expression. I'll admit I do far more reading than writing. Reading has always been my first love. Anyway, love this site and glad to be here.

Fluff and backpatting gives us hives. Credit where it's due, always, but we're never going to be impressed by the "oh wow I love your poem now please love mine" crowd. It's great to have you here.

My toad is not intrinsically evil. Chris just has the sort of mind
that is susceptible to squat, rough-skinned, tailless amphibians:

As well as ones with tales:

Three toads hopped into a bar.
The bartender looked up and told the first toad:
"You're in the wrong joke."
The first toad looked back at him and said:
"Oh, sorry, we thought we were in a bar."
The bartender shook his head:
"What is it with you epistemological externalists anyway?

Hi, Rob. Who are you to comment? A reader Smile. There are tips for critiquing in the important threads of Newly Registered and Novice, just do some reading on the site and you'll get the hang of it.

There's also a link on the home page to Colin Ward's Poetry Tips, a fun and informative read.

Welcome, hope you enjoy the site. Smile

What's this 'Warning Level' thingy all about under my Avatar?

Ha, that's me a year ago. if you're interested in learning the Poetry Practice threads have great explanations.

Warnings are given for rule infractions, usually for dumping your own poems without giving critique to others or continuous posting of one-liners in the workshops. It's pretty much three strikes and you're out, but that's rare. Most people that don't like the format of the site disappear on their own. Smile

You need five thoughtful critiques in the workshops to become a full member and be able to post your own work there. Keep at it. Smile

Anyone can post in Newly Registered, though my advice is to do the work and post in the workshops. Your choice.

Hello Friends.
I am completely new to this world so my critiques are of course only based on my experiences (None being poetry)
I'm from Canada and its cold.
Please be brutally honest with me.
Chris
Oh, have I mentioned I enjoy staying up quite late? My posts will mostly be past 12AM I'm guessing

Hi and welcome, Chris -- we won't notice what time you're posting most of the time, since we're all over the world. You posted an hour ago and it's now 6pm for me Smile

^^^ Chris back

For some reason my account got deleted and one of my posts was removed. Could someone please give me an explanation why it was removed without warning? Christoph2 was the account I just posted with lastnight. Hoping this can be figured out as I'd like to post on the forums. I know nothing offensive was said.

if a post was removed by a mod, it was probably because it was a one liner that in no way helped the poet. we expect more than one liners. the rule we sent you and every other member on joining the site explains everything. warnings don't seem to work so we don't always give them.
glad you took the time to rejoin

Hi everyone
I'm a singer/songwriter from Canada.
Some of my lyrics will never be songs - my wife tells me it's poetry - so thought I would find out if anyone agrees with that here!
Looking forward to reading others' work - from what I've seen the quality is super!

Welcome. Beguile us with the dewy lyrics of poetic providence, please! Be prepared to utilize the editorial scalpel of torturous refinement on your poetry... Hope you like this site as much as I do.

Hi folks,

I'm an Internet Architect by trade but I use travel and fiction writing to save my soul from a life in geek-hell. The travel writing just came out of doing it for fun and work with lots of time on my hands and plenty of tales of humanity puffing it's chest.

I've recently started dabbling in some poetry, most of which came out of my fiction writing as certain characters and situations called for it, but there are pieces that just didn't make the final cut.

Folks seem to like it so I figured I'd try and get some impartial feedback.

I'm liking what I've read here already - y'all seem like a nice bunch so I hope you don't slaughter me too much. I'm certainly not about traditional form or sticking rigidly to any defined metre Smile

Rich./

Welcome, Rich, thanks for the thoughtful critiques you've given others. Don't worry about slaughter, if it occurs it would be the poem, not you. Big Grin
