Say "Hi" in this Thread
Hi Serena, and welcome Smile

There are plenty of places to practice here and you'll get some great advice. If you're reasonably new and haven't had too much experience with various techniques, check out the Poetry Practice forum -- there are no posting limits there as long as you're following the rules of the form (or trying to). If there's something you're not sure of and it's not covered in your welcome letter, please ask.

Hi,

I am trying to improve my writing. I am pleased to have found this site and hopefully it will be a good fit all around. I try to take my writing seriously and myself not so seriously.

Many thanks for the welcome, Leanne. :Smile I am inexperienced with many techniques. I've done rhyme schemes, 3-5 word line limits and played around with oxymoron but I am unsure if I'd done them right. Thank you for the suggestion, I'll be sure to take part in them. Smile

Also, we have some challenges coming up for National Poetry Month (it's a US thing but those of us in other countries still get involved). Be sure to check out Milo's forum for the prompts coming up in April -- no critique, no pressure, just poetry.

I've know about NaNoWriMo but this is the first I've of there being a Poetry Month. I'll definitely check out Milo's forum for prompts.

Leanne, I've read almost every challenge in the Poetry Practice Exercise section. I've not seen one with this pattern: AA-BB-CC-DD and so on but with a constant amount of lines per stanza. What type of poetry does that fall under?

Hi Billy! Thank you for the welcome. I've already begun to walk around in this slipper.  Smile

I'll move on up then!  Big Grin

Serena, that's rhyming couplets -- not a form, per se, just a rhyme scheme that used to be quite common. It's fallen out of favour these days except for humorous poems, although it's quite popular among beginners also as it's nice and easy. Nothing wrong with easy, by the way. Have a play with it -- the biggest trap people fall into is using obvious rhymes, but it can be quite interesting with some clever word use.

Hey everyone, some creep sitting at a computer here, ready to make you cringe. Most of my writing is based off of flaws in modern society, thrown into a mixbag of themes. Hope to see you all on the other side.(of the forum)

Hey everyone.
I've been a lyricist in a few bands for ages but am taking a bit of a hiatus from music to write, maybe even try getting published. A friend of mine suggested joining some forums to get critiques. I tried on Reddit but the poetry communities there are a bit dead. I'm excited to see what you guys have in store though! I'm not the most experienced with critiquing work but hey, new beginnings.

Welcome to the Pen, cr4 and Lip. If you'd like to read some critique tips you'll find them in the Important Threads of Novice, figuring out what works and doesn't work in the poems you read can have a profound effect on what you write. Smile

Hi, I'm EGR.

After years of resistance, I've finally embraced that I have a serious thing for poetry, so here I am.
Mostly here to read and critique, but maybe eventually I'll post my own.

Thanks.

Good on you for admitting your fatal flaw, EGR. We understand and welcome you to our pathetic, poetry-riddled fold.

Reading and critiquing makes us crazy happy. Seriously, we will hold you here forever and you will never be able to leave.

ummm... people say I should stop talking now...

Haven't even looked anywhere else yet, but no doubt I'll visit around.

cheers!

No, not a typo, an allusion to an old folk song.

But thanks for looking out for me, and for the invitation and the welcome. *smooch*

"There were twa corbies three ravens sat on a tree.
Down a down hey down a down...." *

which is derived from this, I think:

http://www.twocrows.co.uk/twa_corbies.html

*And now I think about it, it was the poem I was remembering and NOT the song, which actually has three ravens sitting on the triee, down a down etc. Ah well, it's just an April Fools hangover. Big Grin
