I'm pretty new to poetry, but don't be afraid to be as harsh on my work as you would be your own. Can't wait to see what's in store.

I've always thought PigPen should change its name to "Poetry Department" (Monty Python continues to hold my heart fast).
We prefer not to use the word "harsh" here. That said, Leanne must be addressed as "Mistress" and sincere requests for a
spanking are always welcome. What's in store in the poetry department... are you being served?

Hello to all.

My name is Frank, I'm in Australia and I've been writing for a good while now.

I'm looking around to expand places that I visit with my work from time to time and stumbled here on the way.

I'm not a great one for critique of other poet's work. I feel that the shape and the idea is their own and not for me to be reshaping. Happy to help with small things in consistency and content, however.

See you around,

Frank

Good afternoon, Frank, I hope you're enjoying your Thursday. When it comes to critique, we're not asking that you rewrite another person's work (in fact, that's pretty much what we're asking that you NOT do) -- just an insightful reading and examination of whether certain techniques, word choices etc are the best (in your opinion) for the poem. If you can write poetry, I'm sure you're able to read it well enough.

What you've done so far is just fine Smile

Hi Frank, welcome to the site! Critique can mean a lot of different things. If you explain how the author can improve or let them know what's working and why or what's not working and why that will get you through most critiques.

Welcome Frank!

#1: Listen to Leanne, she's one of the wisest (both ways) people we got here.
#2: If possible, you should leave Australia.

On #2: you don't have to leave just because I'm here.

Hi, Frank, welcome to the Pen. I started to respond and got sidetracked but they've already said what I had in mind (except for the Australia crack), so just welcome, have fun and enjoy playing and working with the poems here.

Hello everyone my name is Wendy. I have been writing my whole life but I really haven't posted anything online since the early 2000's so this is really way out of my comfort zone. I am not very schooled on grammar and form, not that I haven't had the opportunity I just didn't pay attention. Anyway I am sure this will be a great experience as far as expanding my craft and creativity of expression.

Cheers!

Ha, that's me on the grammar and form if you add meter in there. Big Grin This site has really helped me grow in those areas, I care about a lot of things I never gave a thought to and the members here have been endlessly patient with my attempts to learn what many of them know so well.

So welcome to the pen, throw out the comfort zone, it's the internet, who cares? Hysterical Jump on in.

"not that I haven't had the opportunity I just didn't pay attention"

Considering the membership of PigPen, you're going to fit right in.

Welcome!

Hey all! My name is Ashley, and I've been writing on and off for a few years. My junior year of high school teacher called me the best student she'd ever had and we still somewhat keep in touch. I just started a youtube and I also have a hellopoetry, among other websites, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share the links xD My main passion is visual art and I actually went to art school for two years before I had to leave due to money, so anything creative is a huge passion of mine. I'm was juried into an art show and am showing my art in my city at a 200+ artist event in September, so I'm pretty excited about that! I'm going back to school in the fall to major in psychology and minor in art, and then once I'm finished in about two years, I hope to go onto grad school and become an art therapist. I want to join clubs like the poetry club, active minds, the social justice coalition, etc. I'm almost 28, so I'm an older returning non-traditional student, but I'm still really excited. That's sort of what I have going on at the moment Smile I'm excited to see what people offer in the form of poetry and critique, to learn, and to share my own poetry. Thanks for reading! See you all around! Smile I've loved what I've seen so far!

Welcome, Ashley! You can share the links in your signature, that's fine, as long as you're not here just to spam us and make us visit your page -- which is clearly not your intention. At the top of your page you'll see a link to UserCP -- down the left hand side of the screen there are options including "change signature".

You'll find that studying poetry as an academic and using it as a "real person" are rather different -- it sometimes takes a while to reconcile the two, but understanding both perspectives will make you an infinitely better poet. We do have a good number of academics on board and we're very happy to push you to as high a level as you'd like to reach, if you're game.

Thank you! I'm sorry I just saw this now. I didn't mention this in my original introduction post, but I want to gear my poetry more towards spoken word poetry. Is that something some people do here? My boyfriend and I just went to one of our local slam poetry events last night, and it was one of the best nights I've had in a very long time; I want to be able to get up the courage to read some of my poetry there eventually, and I want to become a regular there. I actually cried from happiness when we got home, haha, I've just been neglecting anything artistic, really, for a long time. It's just an all around amazing place and environment with amazing seeming people.

That might be what you mean by "real person" and academic? For example, I'm obsessed with anything that Button Poetry puts out, but then I notice that in the books by those poets, the poems are constructed much differently than they are performed for their online videos.

Oh gosh, honestly, hearing that there are academics here intimidates me haha, but I'll try not to be; I think it's wonderful that you're/they're here and take the time to post and help out. That's pretty amazing, actually. I hope I'm still able to contribute something meaningful sometimes. I appreciate all the help and am definitely game. I really hope to take a poetry class in college if I can, even though I have more than enough English and Art electives already. I'm excited to be here! Thanks for the warm welcome!

You can never have too many English and Arts electives!

We do have spoken word stuff on here, although it's important to note that there is a real difference in the crafting of a poem for reading on a page compared to on a stage -- even if it's essentially the same poem. Here, hopefully, you'll find people to help you with both (and help others as well).
