Why No Clichés
If you use clichés
and refuse to stop,
you have no talent.

How long after picking up the brush, the first masterpiece?
The goal is not to obfuscate that which is clear, but make clear that which isn't.

When I saw the thread title I was hoping for a full-length lecture.
My question is, are there valid exceptions?

Ha, I speak in cliches all the time, they are a great way of bringing along a boatload in a few words, but when I'm am writing I want to offer the reader something more, something novel, something to turn over on the tongue and in the mind. It's fun to think past the common to the unknown and poetry readers like to think.

I would give an arm and a leg
to be rid once and for all
of cliches, bag and baggage.
But maybe at the end of the day
we revert to the mean
because it's the easy way out
and that's the elephant in the room.

Apologies if I derailed your thread. As it is in a critical forum I have one thought below you might think about.

you are as much as admitting you could strike "as much as" here. I think the tightness is worth the slight change of meaning. I dunno, sounds more firm to me.
you have no talent.

Noted.
I may have jumped from the frying pan into the fire,

This thread reminds me of a song by Rise Against called "Broken English".
Lyrics: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/riseagain...glish.html
These fragments I have shored against my ruins
Why then Ile fit you
-T.S. Eliot (The Wasteland)
