An excellently concise and affecting image. The only thing which troubles me is "black clouds." It seems like it might be a metaphor for the rooks rising into consciousness, which wouldn't be kosher.

I had never before heard the word 'Rookery' so i thank you for enlightening me to a new (awesome) word.

Rookery seems to point at seabirds/seals etc (or do you mean collection of nests high in trees?)
and because of the scarecrow line i immediately thought the 'black cloud' was in relation to a flock of crow's, so my immediate reaction was
one of slight confusion.. I'm just curious as to your intent with this interesting wording Smile

That being said, i think this is wonderful in it's simplicity and the imagery that flows to mind with ease when reading is truly beautiful

a rook is an English member of the crow family. their collective nests is called a rookery. the flock you saw was spot on.
it's an observational poem.
